The presence of immigrant students is becoming one of the most outstanding features of the Spanish educational system. With this context in mind, this paper intends to analyse students’ perceptions of their level of competence and the importance they attach to the three compulsory languages (Basque, Spanish and English) in the curriculum of the Basque Autonomous Community. The sample was made up of 125 first-year Secondary Education students, who, after having completed a questionnaire, were divided into two groups. The first one consisted of local students, whereas immigrant students made up the second one. Results demonstrate that both groups find themselves at home in Spanish, but their level of competence and the importance attached to both the minority and the foreign language are far from being satisfactory.
